The UltraSense cable monitoring system

During production use UltraSense to monitor:

• Voids
• Absence of screen layers
• Dimensional accuracy

of 3 layer extruded XLPE, EPR and PE High Voltage power cable.

The UltraSense cable monitoring system gives the manufacturer an early and continuous warning of errors in the dimensions on all three polymer layers. Thinning or absence of the inner semiconductor layer is monitored, as this has a profound effect on the subsequent electrical performance of the cable. Additionally UltraSense gives an alarm on protrusions and fall-ins during the process and gives a continuous map of voids and inclusions showing the quality of the insulator for the whole length of the cable.

All the dimensional and flaw data are logged to a data file specific to each cable run. To control the process, these data can be addressed during the manufacturing run. At the end of a run the data can be retrieved for further analysis in the event of failure in final test. The features found using the analysis software are helpful for qualifying Partial Discharges detected at final test.
